Oregano improves cholesterol and health
We investigated the effects of Origanum onites, commonly known as oregano, on cholesterol levels and overall endothelial function among 48 patients with mild hyperlipidaemia. The participants were given lifestyle and dietary recommendations, but the study group, consisting of 32 patients, also received 25 ml of oregano distillate after each meal for three months.

The results were promising. We observed a notable increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, often referred to as the "good" cholesterol, alongside significant decreases in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein(a), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in the study group.

Furthermore, activities related to antioxidant enzymes and blood vessel dilation showed marked improvements in those consuming the oregano distillate compared to the 16 patients in the control group. All these findings suggest that incorporating oregano into daily life may have beneficial effects on cholesterol management and cardiovascular health for individuals dealing with mild hyperlipidaemia.

Oregano seed lowers cholesterol levels
The anti-cholesterol effects of oregano seed extract were put to the test in a study involving mice on a high-fat diet. We observed that administering ethyl acetate fraction of oregano seed (OSEA) significantly impacted various cholesterol levels after ten weeks of treatment. The mice receiving 100 mg/kg of OSEA showed impressive reductions in both total cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared to those on a high-fat diet without the oregano supplement.

Not only did the body weight of the mice decrease, but their liver health improved as well, with a notable drop in liver fat content. The high-density lipoprotein (often referred to as "good" cholesterol) even showed an increase in the treated mice, indicating a positive shift in their cholesterol profile.

Furthermore, we found that OSEA affected genes linked to liver fat accumulation, reducing their expression significantly. In simpler terms, oregano may hold promise as a natural way to support cholesterol levels and promote liver health, particularly for individuals struggling with obesity or fatty liver concerns.

Oregano lowers cholesterol in chicks
We explored how oregano extract could help manage high cholesterol levels in broilers, focusing on its effects during heat stress. In a controlled study involving 150 male Indian River chicks, we divided them into five groups. The first group served as a control with a standard diet, while the other groups received diets enriched with different amounts of rosemary or oregano extracts.

The results were promising, particularly for the groups that received the oregano extract. Notably, the group given 100 mg/kg of oregano showed a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol levels. This suggests that oregano may play a beneficial role in reducing this harmful type of cholesterol in heat-stressed broilers.

Additionally, we observed positive shifts in overall growth performance among those receiving oregano. The chicks consuming oregano had improved weight gain and better feed conversion ratios compared to the control group.

In summary, integrating oregano into the diets of heat-stressed broilers could help lower cholesterol levels while supporting healthier growth, making it a worthwhile consideration for poultry nutrition.

Thyme types impact cholesterol levels
We explored the impact of various thyme types, including oregano, on cholesterol levels and anemia. In our study, we used 42 male Wistar albino rats divided into six groups, some of which received a 2% cholesterol diet along with different thyme infusions.

Our findings revealed that the thyme varieties did exhibit a positive effect on reducing cholesterol levels. However, it’s important to note that there was a notable incidence of anemia in the group receiving Thymbra spicata, and some liver damage was observed as well.

While oregano's results were part of the broader assessment with other thyme types, the overall findings indicated its potential for supporting cholesterol management, although further studies would be necessary to isolate its specific effects.
